Born in the early 20th century, modern dance is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Modern dancers reject the limitations of classical ballet and favor movements derived from the expression of their inner feelings. During the 1900's, European dancers began rebelling against the rigid rules of classical ballet. Turning against the structured techniques, costumes and shoes of ballet, these dancers flavoured a more relaxed, free style of dancing. Modern dance pioneers often danced in bare feet and revealing costumes. In the United States, several dance pioneers paved the way for American modern dance, including the legendary Martha Graham.
Martha Graham
Martha Graham is considered one of the foremost pioneers of American modern dance. In order to express the passion, rage and ecstasy of humans, she developed her very own language of movement. She created a new dance technique similar to classical ballet, but with several differences. She focused heavily on basic human movement, concentrating on the movements of contraction and release. Instead of striving for long, fluid movements, Graham's movements were sharp and jagged. Her dancing aimed to expose basic human emotions through movement. Graham's brave vision for modern dance earned her several awards and honors.
Characteristic of Modern Dancing
Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique, as in ballet.
Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. A modern dancer rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting instead for deliberate falls to the floor.
Modern Dance Today
Modern dancers use dancing to express their innermost emotions, often to get closer to their inner-selves. Before attempting to choreograph a routine, the modern dancer decides which emotions to try to convey to the audience. Many modern dancers choose a subject near and dear to their hearts, such as a lost love or a personal failure. The dancer will choose music that relates to the story they wish to tell, or choose to use no music at all, and then choose a costume to reflect their chosen emotions.

Tango is one of the most fascinating of all dances, the tango is a sensual ballroom dance that originated in South America in the early twentieth century. Tango is usually performed by a man and a woman, expressing an element of romance in their synchronized movements. Originally, the tango was performed only by women, but once it spread into Argentina, it developed into a dance for couples. The popularity of the tango has greatly increased over the years. Argentine Tango is much more intimate than Modern Tango, and is well-suited to dancing in small settings. Argentine Tango retains the intimacy of the original dance.
History Of Tango :
Early tango styles greatly influenced the ways in which we dance today. Tango music has become one of the greatest of all music genres throughout the world. Spanish settlers were the first to introduce the tango to the New World. Ballroom tango originated in working-class Buenos Aires. The dance spread quickly through Europe during the 1900's, then moved on into the United States. Tango began gaining popularity in New York around 1910.
Tango Style :
Several different styles of tango exist, each with its own individual flair. Most of the styles are danced in either open embrace, with the couple having space between their bodies, or in close embrace, where the couple is closely connected at either the chest or the hip area. Many people are familiar with "ballroom tango," characterized by strong, dramatic head snaps.
Tango Technique :
Tango is danced to a repetitive style of music. The count of the music is either 16 or 32 beats. While dancing the tango, the lady is held in the crook of the man’s arm. She holds her head back and rests her right hand on the man's lower hip. The man must allow the lady to rest in this position while leading her around the floor in a curving pattern. Tango dancers must strive to make a strong connection with the music as well as their audience.
How to Tango :
If you are interested in learning how to tango, look for a class in dance studios in your area. Tango classes are lots of fun, and newcomers tend to pick up the dance quickly. If you would rather learn at home, several videos are available for purchase online. If you decide to learn by video, try to take at least a few classes when you feel confident enough...nothing can take the place of live, hands-on instruction.

oBelly dancing is based on one of the oldest social dances in world history, originating in North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Belly dancing is both a beautiful form of dance and a great way to exercise. It'll help you stay in shape and allow you to express your personal creativity. Belly dancing is enjoyed by many people all over the world. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of belly dancing is the isolated movement performed by the abdomen. These belly movements may be circular, rolling, angular or vibrating.
History of Belly Dancing:
Much debate surrounds the origins of belly dancing, probably due to limited academic research. Several theories exist about the true development of this unique dance form. Over the years, different styles of belly dancing have evolved from various cultures. Belly dancing has popularized for several reasons, including entertainment, cultural ritual, childbirth preparation, physical fitness, and celebration. Because belly dancing seems to be a combination of many different dance style, it therefore has a variety of origins. One such origin seems to be ethnic folk dancing.
Belly Dancing Music:
Almost any type of music can be used for belly dancing. Music tends to be a powerful motivator. Depending on the goals of your belly dancing workout, however, choosing the right music is important. Whether belly dancing for an aerobic workout, a personal meditation, or a stretch routine, choosing inspiring music will help you enjoy the experience even more. Feel free to use any style or genre of music for belly dancing. If you're serious about learning authentic belly dancing, however, traditional Middle Eastern music will further help you understand how to correctly move the hips and abdomen.
Belly Dancing Costumes:
Belly dance is usually performed wearing long skirts or harem pants. Some belly dancers prefer to simply wear a leotard or a stretchy, form-fitting top. While belly dancing, it is often desirable to keep the midriff uncovered, allowing the defining movements of the abdominals to be visible. Although some dancers prefer to dance in bare feet, shoes are sometimes necessary when dancing outside of the home or studio. Comfortable shoes or sandals with flexible soles, such as ballet slippers, are good choices.
How to Start Belly Dancing:
If you are interested in trying belly dancing, your first step will be to find a qualified teacher's. Check around for local instructors at private studios or college campuses. If you'd rather learn belly dancing in the privacy of your own home, consider investing in a few instructional DVD's. Your next step will be to invest in a few belly dancing costume supplies. Look at dance supply stores or thrift shops for inspiration. Your belly dancing practice attire need not be elaborate, but should serve as inspiration.
Belly Dancing Forms:
Several different styles of belly dancing are popular in the United States today. There are two basic forms of belly dancing: "raqs baladi" and "raqs sharqi." Raqs baladi is social belly dancing performed for celebration by both males and females of all ages. These belly dances are usually performed during social gatherings such as weddings and parties. The second form of belly dancing, raqs sharqi, is a more theatrical version and is the most popular form of belly dancing performed in America today. It is also performed by both male and female dancers.
Raqs Sharqi :
The term "raqs sharqi" means "dance of the East" or "dance of the Orient." Raqs sharqi is the Arabic name for what Americans refer to as belly dance. This Egyptian form belly dancing is lighter, with many movements performed on the balls of the feet. Upper body movement is abundant, with plenty of arm waves and shoulder shimmies. As it is a "show business" style of belly dancing, raqs sharqi dancers tend to wear bright, glitzy costumes with lots of sequins and beaded fringes. Elaborate, close-fitting dresses are often worn with deep slits on the sides to draw attention to the legs.Music for raqs sharqi is composed using a wide range of instruments, in order to give dancers a wider selection of movements. The music, originating mostly from early Egyptian-Classical styles, consists of simple Arabic pieces to more modern Turkish tracks.
Raqs Baladi :
Raqs baladi refers to a particular style of belly dancing. The term translates to "native dance" or "country dance" in Egyptian Arabic. Raqs baladi is most known to be an Egyptian folk dance. Baladi is the most ancient form of Egyptian solo dance. Raqs Sharqi is a by-product of this original style of Eyptian dance.
Raqs baladi is a social dance performed for fun and celebration by men and women of all ages, usually during festive occasions and social gatherings such as parties and weddings. It is an improvisational dance integrated with the rhythm of the music. Baladi dancers traditionally wear an ankle length, baladi dress with a coordinating hip scarf.Baladi music consists of several distinct sections, although not every piece of baladi music has all the sections. Musicians as well as dancers typically improvise within a loose framework, which makes the style truly original.
Belly Dancing Movements:
Although it may seem that only the abdominal area is moving, belly dancing involves several other parts of the body as well. While belly dancing, a dancer must isolate major muscle groups and work them in isolation or in opposition to other parts of the body. Sharp, angular movements are inner directed, with belly dancing covering very little floor space. Belly dancing is usually performed as a solo dance, but groups may also dance together in a choreographed routine.
well, from my last story i tell you guys about how i like dance so much, and now i will tell u guys a little about hip-hop...
What is Hip Hop ??
Hip hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip hop music, that evolved from the hip hop culture. The first dance associated with hip hop was breakdancing. While breakdancing consists primarily of moves executed close to the ground, the majority of hip hop moves are done standing up. Hip Hop Culture ??
Hip hop developed from several cultures, including jazz, rock, tap and American and Latino cultures. Hip hop is a very energetic form of dancing. It is unique in that it allows its dancers to perform with freedom of movement, adding in their own personalities. The hip hop culture is influenced by the following four elements:
Disc jockeys
Graffiti (art)
MCs (rappers)
B-boys and B-girls (breaker boys and girls)
Hip Hop Dance Step
Hip hop dance steps require skill and experience to perfect. Hip hop dancers practice a lot in order to master basic steps and movements that appear simple when performed. Dancers with a good sense of rhythm find it easier to learn hip hop steps.
Learning Hip Hop
Hip hop classes are popping up in dance studios around the country. Teens are particularly interested in learning how to dance like dancers they see on MTV and music videos. Dance teachers have capitalized on this interest and have started incorporating hip hop and breakdancing classes into their curriculums. Many people with roots in hip hop culture feel that hip hop dancing should not be formally "taught." They feel that teaching specific moves takes away from the originality factor that hip hop possesses.
The Element of the Hip Hop itself
If you ask several people to define the term "Hip Hop", chances are you will here several different answers. Hip hop is much more than a way of moving to Hip Hop Music...it is a way of life. Hip hop is a lifestyle that includes its own language, music, wardrobe style and style of dance.
Some people believe that hip hop dancing is simply moving to hip hop music. However, hip hop as a dance style is anything but simple. Hip hop dancers frequently engage in friendly battles or informal dance competitions. In an article appearing in Dance Teacher magazine, Rachel Zar discusses the top five elements of hip hop dance.
1. Popping
Created by Sam Solomon in Fresno, California and performed by the Electric Boogaloos dance crew, popping consists of quickly contracting and relaxing your muscles, causing a jerk in your body. The hips and legs usually remain in a relaxed position while movements of the arms and hands are more distinct and exact. Movements are big and coordinated closely with the beats of the music. Locking has a bit of a comedic flair and is usually performed to funk or soul music. Dancers who perform locking movements are called "lockers."
